With a pair of newly available smartphone apps, you can now talk to your Logitech Ultimate Ears (UE) Boom or Megaboom speakers & have them respond by playing music from your favorite artists from services like Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio. You can even use the new apps to order pizza, catch a ride & do most anything that your Alexa voice assistant can do.
Logitech’s best selling Bluetooth wireless speakers have been around for a while. They’re both meant to be used outdoors, are waterproof & have really impressive sound quality. They have excellent wireless range, can be used in pairs & provide equalization features to add to their impressive bass response.
The new apps, 1 for each of the 2 speaker lines (the Boom – now Boom2 & the more recent & more powerful Megaboom), are still in their beta releases, but already sport an impressive set of features. The main feature is integration with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant & so make it easy for you to access your favorite artists.
To get started, you’ll have to uninstall your current UE apps, then just install one of the 2 beta apps, depending on which speaker you have. The app will update the speaker’s firmware & you’ll have to sign on to your Amazon account. Then tap the Bluetooth button on top of the Boom or Megaboom & ask Alexa to stream whatever music comes to mind, provide track info & even switch between playlists. There’s no need to touch your phone, just talk to your speaker.
The following services are supported:
Amazon Music / Amazon Music Unlimited
Amazon Prime Music
These apps do have some drawbacks, though, as the beta apps don’t support alarm features available in the main apps. They will also disable tap to talk integrations with Google Assistant & Siri if you’ve got those working in your current app.
You can get the UE Boom 2 from the Ultimate Ears website here for US$ 149.00 & the UE Megaboom for US$ 299.99 here. The beta apps are available for Android phones on Google Play & are free of charge. The UE Boom beta is available here & the UE Megaboom beta here.
